They manage to find stories every day that make me cringe when I realize the kids are in the room. Home video of girls fighting, security video of convenience store clerks with guns to their heads, descriptions of grizzly murders, video of brawls on school busses. Stories of sexual abuse, torture, kidnapping and killing. Truly horrible things brought right into our living rooms on our 50″ hi-definintion TVs.
I don’t want to watch anymore. But for me, watching the evening news is like brushing my teeth, it’s part of the daily routine. For decades I was part of the news. What it’s become is a big part of the reason I left.
The point is, there is bad everywhere. There are bad people. There are good people bad things happen to. Bad things happen all the time. So do good things. It comes down to this, what do you chose to focus on? It makes all the difference in the world.
I’m not talking about sticking your head in the sand. I’m not talking about some naive, pollyanna view of life. I’m talking about gratitude, about acknowledging the good, embracing the positive. And when the bad happens to you, and unfortunately, odds are bad things will happen to us all, be ready to face your challenges, to fight to overcome your obstacles. Understand that it’s how we handle the horrible that defines who we are. Watching us stand up to the bad inspires others to do the same when it’s their turn.
Yes, life is too serious to be taken seriously. So live yours. As Tower of Power says in their song, Funk the Dumb Stuff. Focus on the good. Deal with the bad. And have a great life… Seriously!
