Let the REAL Fantasy Take Flight
One of the most unusual attractions in the country is shutting down. After eighteen years of operation, Fantasy of Flight in Polk County, FL announced it will close. News reports have lamented its demise. But I have news for you. In the words of Mark Twain, “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
Fantasy of Flight was created by one of the most interesting entrepreneurs in America. Kermit Weeks does not quit, and he never walks away. Kermit has a vision and it is far more ambitious than a simple airplane museum. Weeks wants to change your life. He wants Fantasy of Flight to be the catalyst.
Have you ever been there? You haven’t gone because you’re really not sure what it is, right? Weeks knows that. He knows the current park would never draw big crowds. But far from a failure, he sees this incarnation of Fantasy of Flight as simply a step in the evolution of a vision.
I had a long and fascinating conversation with Weeks. The man is fearless, and committed to creating something truly innovative, something that will inspire guests on a very personal level. Could he be shutting the park down to step back and launch something greater? “I’m not here to teach people about aviation or about aviation history or how an airplane flies, I’m here to use it to teach people about themselves.”
Weeks is a pilot. He owns one of the greatest private collections of vintage aircraft in the world. He has flown just about every one of them. But his love of flying is not restricted to sitting in the cockpit. Weeks’ true passion is the metaphor of flight. He is a student of life, prone to spending hours, days and weeks just thinking, trying to comprehend consciousness, energy and purpose. He is extremely creative, and nothing brings him greater pleasure than making a difference in the lives of others.
He has one goal: To light the spark within. He wants to help you find your purpose, your path, your way of making a difference in the world. He wants to help your life take flight.
I have no idea what, if anything, is about to take shape at Fantasy of Flight. But after listening to Weeks, I feel that he’s not done, and I think he’s going to start working on something very special, something that will inspire us all, “whether you like airplanes or not, every one of us at some level relates to the metaphor of flight for what it truly symbolizes, something beyond ourselves. We can all relate to the concept of reaching for the sky and reaching for the stars. We soar in our imagination. We fly in our dreams.”
And here’s a hint of what could be to come, “In my life, I’ve always had two clear but distinct passions… One is flight itself, and the other is the metaphor of flight. The two had nothing to with each other. But something has happened. All of a sudden, those two passions have become one. Now, for the first time I realize why I’m here, what I’m about to create. I’m about to take us all beyond ourselves!”
Far from the death of a theme park, I believe something new and great is about to evolve. I believe that Weeks is preparing to take off on his greatest flight yet, and that we will all want to climb aboard with him. I hope it’s not long before a new Fantasy of Flight becomes reality!
